Cisco today revealed that it would introduce a digital subscriber
line router priced at less than $200 to offer Internet access via a
wireless LAN hub supporting the 802.11b high-speed wireless
standard. The maximum throughput for that specification is 11M
bit/sec. |

Lucent has its eye on September or October for its standards-based
11-Mbps WaveLAN system, which will be priced on par with, or less
than, the current WaveLAN, which is about $300 per user, according
to the company. Lucent also has licensed its high-speed wireless LAN
technology to Apple Computer (www. apple.com), which has built
wireless networking into its new iBook laptop.
WaveLAN®
Wireless Access Solutions
is a family of products using Radio Frequency
(RF) technology and based on the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless
LANs. Products include the WavePOINT® fixed wireless access points
and bridges, network interface cards for computer devices, antenna
systems, and WaveMANAGERtm network control software.

Proxim, which has been a market-share leader in the 2-Mbps
wireless LAN space, has no plans to adopt the 802.11 High-Rate
technology. Instead, Proxim is developing a system based on
HiperLAN, a European wireless networking standard that operates at
24 Mbps. |
